A history of citizenship
In the Greek city, thousands of years ago, the very idea of citizenship was first introduced.-states. Citizenship was a huge privilege back then. It distinguished free men from slaves and women, as well as barbarians. It wasn’t the right it is today and could be revoked due to a change of economic status or a criminal conviction. It not only marked you as a free man of good economic standing but also allowed you to participate in public life. Aristotle even famously stated that such participation was essential. “To take no part in the running of the community’s affairs is to be either a beast or a god!”.
The Romans took the Greek idea of citizenship and made it an empire.-A building tool. They granted citizenship to a vast portion of the empire’s population and by doing so, they legitimized their rule over those they had conquered. They established expectations, rights and obligations for citizens. They made citizens feel Roman, and made them proud to be Roman. We think the most important thing about them was that they instilled the belief that all citizens should be treated equally under law.
The meaning of citizenship has evolved over the thousands of years since ancient Rome and Greece, but the idea that citizenship involves participation in public life, equality, and fair treatment has remained constant.
Multiple forms of citizenship are available today. Most people are familiar with the national form. This form of citizenship is so widespread that almost everyone can have it. Although it is typically granted at birth, most people can obtain it through naturalization.
A supranational organization is another form of citizenship. One example is the European Union. This form of citizenship can be a way to get citizenship from another member of the organisation. If you don’t want to go through the tedious process of getting German citizenship, then this is an option. Instead, get the Bulgarian citizenship in two years and use it to reside in Germany as an EU citizen. The future is likely to see a dramatic increase in the number of citizens who are pursuing citizenship through free movement within UNASUR or CARICOM.
You can also apply for territorial citizenship. This is not a common type of citizenship, and only applies to certain countries. Hong Kong and Macau are examples. The citizens of these territories are full citizens of the People’s Republic of China but their right of abode is restricted to the territory in which the citizenship was issued (Hong Kong or Macau). Even though they hold a Chinese passport, they are not permitted to live anywhere else in China.
There is also cultural citizenship. This form of citizenship, while common, isn’t very useful. It is certainly not something worth trying in the context of location autonomy. The Commonwealth of Nations is an excellent example of cultural citizenship. Members of the Commonwealth of Nations receive citizenship “some” Other member states have benefits, including the right to vote in some types of elections.
