ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION FOR THE PAINFUL LUMBAR DISC
Instructor: Phillip Snell, DC
“Dr. Snell’s course should be mandatory for every physical medicine practitioner that comes across low back pain. It is the quintessential course for not just treating the symptoms, but uprooting the cause of the problem and empowering the patient to recognize, understand and implement techniques to help them get out of pain, back into activity and become more robust so as to help prevent recurrent episodes.”-Chase Waldrup, DC-Seattle, WA
“This course will 100% help you more effectively diagnose, educate and, most importantly, empower patients with debilitating low back pain to take back control of their lives and learn that there are other options out there besides surgery.”-Andrew Caroon, DC- Vancouver, BC
Pain Science

Pragmatic suggestions for…explanations of…and engagement with the evidence on pain science. Beyond academic notions, learn how to make this evidence work for both doctor and patient.
Imaging Interpretation

How to solve the riddle of the asymptomatic, yet “pathological” disc on imaging. Learn when imaging can be useful and when it may contribute to poor prognosis.
Exercise Intervention

Why ordering of the exercise Rx matters and how to keep the patient engaged and excited about progress. Learn to choose the right exercise, at the right time, in the right patient.

COURSE DETAILS

INTRODUCTION:
The multifactorial nature of chronic lower back pain requires a multi-faceted approach to assessment and treatment. In this course, Dr. Phillip Snell takes the registrant through a deep-dive of the current evidence on imaging, pain science, manual therapy, epigenetic factors and exercise science in an effort to develop an evidence-informed, effective process to address discogenic low back pain.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion, the registrant would be able to:
1. Appreciate major movement patterns contributing to ongoing peripheral nociception and the development of chronic pain, central sensitization and fear avoidant behavior
2. Recognize key elements of effective exercise interventions in managing lumbar disc injury
3. Recognizing the continuum of flexion related structural injury in the lumbar spine
4. Differentiate discriminating factors between the injured disc vs. other commonly presenting back injuries
5. Demonstrate ability to troubleshoot mixed presentations of flexion intolerance and extension intolerance
6. Develop effective treatment plans incorporating specific exercise interventions to manage pain associated with lumbar disc injury
7. Understand key elements of hip dissociation using Prague School and University of Waterloo derived principles
8. Demonstrate ability to integrate Joint by Joint Approach to improve mobility in the hip and T-sp to reduce load on the injured lumbar disc
9. Understand key safe ways to build strength in the recovering flexion-injured spine
10. Understand how to build agility in the injured spine to avoid re-injury with rapid movements
