A board certified hematologist/oncologist, hospice/palliative care physician, Dr. Hubbard assumed his current academic position after serving for 20 years in private practice as a partner in Heartland Hematology/Oncology Associates in the Kansas City area. After graduating from William Jewell College with degrees in biology and chemistry, Dr. Hubbard earned his D.O. from the University of Health Sciences-College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1986 and served his internship at Oklahoma Osteopathic Hospital in Tulsa. After internal medicine residencies at the University of Health Sciences in Kansas City and Normandy Osteopathic Hospitals in St. Louis, Dr. Hubbard completed his fellowship in medical oncology/hematology at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine in internal medicine, medical oncology, hematology, and hospice/palliative medicine. He is a certified hospice medical director by the Hospice Medical Director Certification Board. He is the author of several articles and editorials dealing with issues related to internal medicine, hematology, and oncology, and co-authored the unknown primary malignancy section in the first two editions of the textbook Medical Oncology, edited by M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Hubbard is a past president of the Missouri Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS). He has co-chaired MAOPS Young Physician Committee, has chaired MAOPS Membership and Public Relations Committees, and currently serves on the Audit and Finance Committee, the Legislative Committee, the Physician Development Committee, and the Physician Health Committee. Recently, Dr. Hubbard was asked by MAOPS leadership to chair a task force evaluating opioid prescribing and the role of a prescription drug monitoring program for the state of Missouri. He was recognized as MAOPS Physician of the Year in 2014, and received the Wilbur T. Hill, DO Distinguished Service Award in 2017. Dr. Hubbard has served as president of the American College of Osteopathic Internists (ACOI). He is the co-director for the annual internal medicine board review course sponsored by the ACOI, and is a member of the Gillum Society of Master Fellows of the ACOI. He received the Internist of the Year award from the ACOI in 2013. He has served as chair for the ACOI Information Technology committee. In recognition of his historical effort, the ACOI appointed him Historian for the College; he recently published the book A History of Osteopathic Internal Medicine: Celebrating The ACOI’s First 75 Years detailing the history of osteopathic internal medicine. Dr. Hubbard served as the first president of the Missouri Chapter of the ACOI. Dr. Hubbard is a past president of the Greater Kansas City Southwest Clinical Society. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Society of Hematology, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, and Sigma Sigma Phi National Honorary Fraternity. He is active in his community through his work with the American Cancer Society and through his local church, where he plays in the church’s praise band. In his spare time he enjoys a wide variety of interests including martial arts, photography, model railroading, and music and video production; he has two current band projects covering a wide variety of musical genres. Dr. Hubbard married his college sweetheart, Roxanne.
