Donald Meichenbaum – Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy with Donald Meichenbaum

by Donald Meichenbaum

Donald Meichenbaum expertly demonstrates his refined and renowned Cognitive-Behavioral approach in an actual therapy session in this 3-part video.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy works with the interconnection between thoughts, feelings and behavior using psychoeducational techniques that target symptoms to help clients reach their specific goals. In this video, Meichenbaum demonstrates how to integrate seven key CBT tasks in a single therapy session with a woman who is struggling with severe anxiety and insomnia as the caretaker for her mentally ill father. Meichenbaum highlights the list of “shoulds” and self-criticisms she continually rotates through her mind, and through an exercise helps the client reveal some of the pain and anger that those self-criticisms mask. He offers techniques to help her curb her insomnia and educates her on how an ongoing therapy would help her heal past wounds and teach her to nurture herself. Jon Carlson and Diane Kjos introduce Meichenbaum and facilitate a discussion on his approach.
