Carl Rogers and the Person-Centered Approach

by Carl Rogers

Carl Rogers was one of the most influential psychologists and psychotherapists of our time. In this singular presentation, Rogers’ biographer, Howard Kirschenbaum, guides us through Rogers’ life and work and the development of the “client-centered” and “person-centered” approach to counseling, education, group work, and human relationships.
Enjoy this illuminating documentary about the life and teachings of Carl Rogers by internationally known expert and Rogers’ biographer Howard Kirschenbaum. Heralded as one of the founding fathers of psychotherapy research, in a career spanning six decades, Carl Rogers developed an understanding of the human psyche and an approach to psychotherapy that fundamentally changed the field of counseling and psychotherapy. This remarkable film examines Roger’s personal life and career, and sheds light on the experiences that shaped his revolutionary ideas about psychotherapy – including his departure from the medical model and popularization of the term “client,” his skepticism about expert theories, his belief in the strength of the human will and the client’s knowledge of what hurts, and the importance of the therapeutic alliance.
Rogers was a man ahead of his time and many of his insights about the therapeutic relationship have been repeatedly validated by current scientific research. Indeed, the data overwhelmingly demonstrates that successful therapeutic outcomes are the product of a strong therapeutic alliance with the client (a concept developed by Rogers), rather than any particular therapeutic method or technique. This video provides viewers the opportunity to develop a richer understanding of the genesis of the concept of therapeutic alliance, as well as a greater understanding of the man whose theoretical understandings have been highly influential in the development of current popular approaches like motivational interviewing (MI) and emotionally focused therapy (EFT).
In Depth

“… The client has within himself the capacity, latent if not evident, to understand those aspects of his life and of himself which are causing him pain, and the capacity and tendency to reorganize himself and his relationship to life in the direction of self-actualization and maturity in such a way as to bring a greater degree of internal comfort. The function of the therapist is to create such a psychological atmosphere as will permit this capacity and this strength to become effective rather than latent or potential.”

—Carl Rogers
This video compellingly demonstrates the congruence that ran throughout Rogers’ life and work. His person-centered approach was more than just a technique but a belief about humanity which permeated his life. He fully embodied his beliefs and his commitment to being with the client is evident in the videos and audio recordings shared in the film. Rogers is shown to be an exceptional listener and communicator, as well as a kind and honorable person dedicated to promoting peace.
Rogers’ impact on the field of psychology – via research, teaching, practice and leadership – was profound. Note that popular approaches today as diverse as Emotionally Focused Therapy and Motivational Interviewing cite Rogers as being influential in their development. This video presents a rare opportunity to develop a wider understanding of Rogers’ impact on not only the field of psychotherapy but other fields as well, like education, parenting, group leadership, and the health professions. Rogers was the first to record and publish complete cases of psychotherapy which provided vast amounts of data and enabled client-centered therapy and its outcomes to be measured. Rogers also experimented with using a person-centered approach to resolve inter-group and international conflict with multicultural populations around the world. His work led him to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987.
