In a very short period he took 1st place in the Asia-Pacific Championships, World Cup and World Championships and achieved unprecedented success.Following an injury during team kumite at the 8th World Championships in 1986 rumor had it that he would soon retire.He overcame this hard time, however, and attended the 15th Japan Cup in 1987 in which he advanced to the finals against Hiromasa Shimizu. Surprisingly Nishimura became the Japan Champion after an incredible 6 year gap.
