Irvin Yalom: Live Case Consultation
by Irvin Yalom
Yalom provides consultation to therapists on individual and group therapy cases. See how he translates his existential and interpersonal approach into action in this highly acclaimed video.
Three therapists with varying levels of experience present the following cases to master clinician Irvin Yalom:
Sue, a 50 year old divorced woman struggling to find meaning in her life after a failed marriage and an empty nest.
Paul, an artist with work inhibition, yearning for more in his life.
Jeffrey, a group therapy patient seeking help to control angry outbursts in marriage.
Dr. Yalom responds to both the clinical issues and the therapists’ reactions and countertransference, always looking for opportunities to bring more focus into the here-and-now of the therapeutic relationship. He highlights key existential themes, interweaving ideas from writers and philosophers who have influenced his thinking, as well as clinical vignettes from his own practice.
In Depth
Irvin Yalom is well known for his seminal texts on group and existential psychotherapy.  In later books such as Love’s Executioner and The Gift of Therapy he describes how he has gradually integrated both the interpersonal model from his group work, as well as his existential theories, into individual psychotherapy.  In this compelling DVD, you’ll see how he translates these theories into practice by helping therapists think along these lines. The concept of working in the here-and-now in individual therapy by focusing on the therapist-client relationship as a microcosm of the client’s interpersonal world is one of the hardest things for therapists to learn.  By watching his DVD you’ll get a much better sense of this powerful way of working, so you can more readily apply this in your own work.
By watching this video, you will be able to:
Increase awareness of here-and-now interactions in the clinical hour.
Develop techniques for exploring existential themes with clients.
Improve skills in understanding and discussing clients with therapists in clinical supervision.
