Chen Zheng Lei – Old Frame 2nd Cannon Fist

Finally, the heart of Chen Zheng Lei’s five volume compendium on taijiquan has been translated. It is a wonderful job. Jack Yan, a Canadian/Chinese disciple of Jack Yan, has translated it beautifully. This is the second volume in the five-volume set. It was written 20 year ago by Jack Yan. Chen Zhenglei is now translated by Jack Yan, his team, and they are to be highly commended.
This volume has three sections. A 105 page introduction, an 220 page section on the foundation form (Laojiayilu), as well as 70 pages covering the topics. Cannon Fist (laojia erlu.)
The introduction is masterful. It is a wonderful introduction. It takes the time to start from the beginning with a solid section about taijiquan theories. It also provides a brief history (15-pages) and brief sections on the characteristics, effectiveness, and limitations of taijiquan. Chen Style Taijiquan. Next, a 16-page section on body requirements (shenfa) is followed by a section about training methods and steps. It also includes an excellent essay about Basic Training Principles. It does not replicate the basic elements for standing and loosening exercises (zhang zhaung), as can be found at Vol. 1.) The section includes single and double-handed silk reeling exercises as well as stepping silk reeling exercises. These are similar, but not identical, to the ones found in Volume 1.

The most important part of the book is a description of each chapter with photos. Chen Zheng Lei’s foundation form, (laojia yilu – old frame first form.) While it can be argued that this type of section has been surpassed by the several DVD’s available on this form, it does provide a substantial and useful set of notes both to someone learning the form and revising it. The volume contains many high quality photographs and interesting descriptions of what students are aiming for. However, this is the weakest part of the translation because of frequent use of technical terms that are not explained.
The third and smaller sections cover the second form (laojiaerlu), commonly referred to by cannon fist, (pau Chui), and similar comments.
This book is a complete guide to taijiquan. It will be of great value to serious students. There are a few things I would like to correct.-Picks about how the translator uses terms without defining or defining them in a way that’s not common. (So it is important to start reading from the beginning to recognize what definitions are made.) However, I would recommend this book to any taijiquan student.
